Concussion Management for Clinicians

This is a one-and-a-half-day course covering the basic pathophysiology as well as the principles of concussion management for therapists looking to advance their knowledge and skill in this field. It is a combination of theory, practical sessions and case studies which will cover:

Incidence, pathophysiology and complexity of concussion management

Anatomy, pathology, assessment and management of the physical systems involved:

  • Visual
  • Vestibular
  • Autonomic
  • Cervical
  • Cognitive

 

The importance of managing the non-physical 24-hour pattern including sleep patterns, medications, education, and onward referrals.

About the presenter

Katie Davies is a Neurological physiotherapist with decades of experience in Neurological rehabilitation. She is the practice principal at Neurological Rehabilitation Group (NRG), which is the longest running private neurological physiotherapy practice in Melbourne.  NRG manage people in the community with neurological and vestibular conditions, including those who have sustained concussions from children through to elite athletes.  She has strong links with experts in concussion management both in Australia and overseas in the USA and Canada, which has shaped her current practice. For the last 6 years, Katie has an honorary appointment at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute as an associate investigator in the multidisciplinary team researching the management of persisting concussion symptoms in children.  She also collaborates with the Turner Institute at Monash University where she is an associate investigator on the iRecover study investigating concussion recovery in adults.   She regularly presents to a variety of health professionals on concussion assessment, treatment and recovery nationally.
